How to Equip an ICU: Complete Disposable Supplies Checklist

March 5, 2026 · 10 min read · Edaochi Medical

Equipping an ICU from scratch means knowing the 80-plus types of disposable supplies consumed daily. This article presents the most critical ones, organised by system and priority, so a procurement team or a distributor supplying a new unit can build the inventory without gaps.

Respiratory system: priority supplies

Respiratory system: priority supplies

The respiratory system concentrates the highest daily consumption. Per ICU bed on mechanical ventilation you need: breathing circuits (changed every 48–72 h), tracheal suction catheters F12–F16 (2–6 per day per protocol), HME filters (1 per day), external suction connectors, and a closed-suction kit if the protocol requires it.

For the detail behind each, see our guides to breathing circuits, suction catheter sizing and the HMEF filter.

Invasive procedures: drapes and kits

Invasive procedures: drapes and kits

Disposable surgical drapes are mandatory in invasive procedures such as central venous catheter insertion, lumbar puncture and thoracocentesis. The all-in-one suction kit reduces preparation time in urgent procedures. For central access specifically, see our central venous catheter (CVC) guide.

Drainage and collection

Drainage and collection

Negative-pressure drainage is essential after thoracic and abdominal surgery. Ostomy bags should be available for patients with colostomies or ileostomies, especially post-op. For urine-output monitoring, the urinary drainage bag and lab urine containers are daily needs — covered in our urinary drainage bag guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many suction catheters are consumed per day in ICU?
