Buying guide — Urology

Urology consumables are bought in French sizes and centimetres, and the classic mistake is not the product but the size-length pair: a 26 cm double-J in a patient who needed 24 is not a better or worse stent, it is the wrong stent. This category covers the whole upper-tract drainage and access chain — locking pigtail catheters, double-J stents in standard and hydrophilic versions, ureteral access sheaths, percutaneous nephrostomy sets and the zebra and super-stiff guidewires — for distributors serving urology and lithotripsy units.

What to verify before buying

  • The double-J French × length pair is decided per patient — order an assortment, not one reference
  • Locking pigtail: the safety string fixes the curl; verify the mechanism your unit uses
  • Ureteral access sheath: the inner diameter must pass your fleet's ureteroscope
  • Nephrostomy: sequential dilatation from 8F — the complete set avoids combining loose references
  • Zebra wire for navigation, super-stiff for dilatation support — different roles, same order

The upper-tract size-length chain

Everything in this category fits one sequence: the wire goes first, dilators or sheath ride over it, and the instrument travels through the sheath or the drain stays behind. Each link fixes the next:

LinkTypical measureConstrains
Zebra wire0.025"–0.038" × 150 cmThe channel of the instrument riding it
Super-stiff wire0.032"/0.035" × 80 cmSupport during tract dilatation
Access sheath10/12/14 Fr × 35/45 cmThe ureteroscope that fits inside
Double-J4–8 Fr × 20–28 cmPatient anatomy — hence the assortment
Nephrostomy10–22 F, dilatation from 8FThe final percutaneous tract calibre

Send your customer's instrument fleet (ureteroscopes, nephroscopes) when quoting sheaths and sets: we verify the inner passage before manufacturing.

Frequently asked questions — Urology

Why is the double-J ordered as an assortment?

Because length is chosen per patient (height and anatomy) and calibre per indication. A real unit consumes a bell curve centred on 4.8–6 Fr × 24–26 cm with tails both ways. The MOQ applies to the order total, not to each combination.

Hydrophilic or standard?

The hydrophilic double-J places with less friction — felt in difficult placements and stone disease. The standard covers the volume at lower cost. Most distributors carry both; the closed-open tip version is made as OEM.

What documentation do you provide?

Technical file, manufacturer ISO 13485 and per-batch sterilisation for destination registration, which the distributor handles.
