Frequently Asked Questions — Disposable Suction Catheter

Which suction catheter size should I use for an adult?

Adults usually take F12 (4.0 mm) to F16 (5.33 mm). Use F6–F10 for children and F4–F6 for neonates. A common rule for endotracheal suctioning is that the catheter should be no more than half the internal diameter of the tube. See our French size chart for Fr-to-mm conversion.

What is the difference between the Type I and Type II catheter?

Type I has a standard straight tip. Type II has an atraumatic curved tip that reduces the risk of trauma to the tracheal mucosa.

What suction pressure should be used?

Use the lowest effective pressure — broadly around 80–120 mmHg in adults, lower for children and neonates — and limit each pass. See our suctioning technique & pressure guide for the full protocol.

Full Description — Disposable Suction Catheter

Edaochi Medical's disposable suction catheter (SKU XY456) is the everyday airway-clearance consumable for ICUs, recovery rooms and emergency departments — used to remove secretions from the trachea, mouth and nose.

A full size range, colour-coded

Fourteen sizes span F4 (1.33 mm) to F20 (6.67 mm), with connectors colour-coded by size so staff grab the right gauge fast. Match size to patient: roughly F12–F16 for adults, F6–F10 for children, F4–F6 for neonates — and keep the catheter at or below half the ET-tube internal diameter. Our French size chart (Fr→mm) and suction catheter sizes & types guide cover selection in detail.

Straight vs curved tip

Type I straight tip for routine suctioning; Type II atraumatic curved tip to reduce mucosal trauma. The transparent wall lets you see the aspirate and printed graduations show insertion depth.

Technique and the rest of the circuit

Use the lowest effective pressure and limit each pass — see our suctioning technique & pressure guide and the broader suction catheters & machines guide. Connect to the vacuum source with our external suction connecting tube.
