Frequently Asked Questions — Heparin Cap / IV Catheter Connector
Does the XY363 heparin cap contain heparin?
No. The XY363 is the sealing connector without built-in heparin; the locking solution (heparinised saline or saline) is injected manually according to the institution's protocol. The cap physically prevents air entry and blood backflow through its silicone anti-reflux valve.
What is the difference between a heparin cap and a needle-free connector?
A heparin cap seals and locks a catheter that is at rest between infusions, keeping it patent. A needle-free connector is an access point used for repeated injection, flushing and sampling on an active line. Many facilities use the needle-free connector for active lines and a cap or lock for dormant ones.
How is catheter patency maintained?
After flushing, the catheter is locked with the cap and a locking solution per protocol (the SASH sequence ends in 'heparinise/lock'). The anti-reflux valve prevents the blood backflow that causes occlusion, keeping the lumen patent until the next use.

Full Description — Heparin Cap / IV Catheter Connector
Edaochi Medical's heparin cap is the simple, essential component that keeps an intravenous catheter patent while it is at rest between infusions. It seals the catheter hub and, combined with a locking solution per protocol, prevents the blood backflow and clotting that would otherwise occlude the line.
How it works
The cap carries a silicone anti-reflux valve that physically blocks air entry and blood backflow. It does not contain heparin itself — the locking solution (heparinised saline or saline) is injected manually following the institution's protocol, the final step of the SASH flushing sequence.
Compatibility
Luer-compatible (Luer-lock / Luer-slip) so it fits peripheral and central catheters and standard syringes. Available in clear and yellow for visual identification, individually sterile-packed for single use.
Clinical use
- Maintaining a peripheral IV catheter between uses - Central venous catheter locking - Parenteral nutrition between cycles - Any intermittent therapy where the line rests between accesses
