Heat-and-moisture-exchange (HME) filter with bacterial/viral filtration for ventilated and anaesthetised patients. Available as Type A (humidity conservation), Type B (bacterial protection) and Type C (full bacterial + viral filtration). The filtered versions remove up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses from the breathing circuit, lowering the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia, while the HME membrane returns warmth and moisture to the inspired gas — replacing active humidification in many cases. Adult and paediatric, single use.

Frequently Asked Questions — HME Breathing Filter / Heat and Moisture Exchanger
How long does an XY655 HME filter last?
Each filter is single use, rated for 24 hours. Replace it daily — or sooner if it becomes wet, soiled or shows increased resistance — to maintain bacterial/viral efficiency and humidification.
What is the difference between HME types A, B and C?
Type A humidifies the inspired gas (heat-and-moisture exchange only). Type B adds bacterial filtration. Type C provides full viral and bacterial filtration, the best choice for patients with respiratory infections.
When should I use an HME instead of a heated humidifier?
An HME (a passive humidifier) is suitable for most adult patients on short-to-medium ventilation and is simpler and lower-cost. A heated humidifier is preferred for thick secretions, very small patients, or long-term ventilation where an HME cannot keep up.

Full Description — HME Breathing Filter / Heat and Moisture Exchanger
Edaochi Medical's HME breathing filter (SKU XY655) does two jobs in one small device: it returns heat and moisture to the gas the patient breathes in, and — in the filtered grades — it traps bacteria and viruses so they do not pass between patient and circuit.
Why an HME matters
A ventilated or anaesthetised patient bypasses the nose and upper airway, which normally warm and humidify air. An HME (a passive "artificial nose") captures exhaled heat and moisture and gives it back on the next breath, preventing the airway drying and mucus plugging that come with dry medical gas. The filtered versions also cut the bacterial and viral load in the circuit, which supports lower ventilator-associated pneumonia rates.
Three grades
- Type A — HME only: humidity conservation. - Type B — bacterial: HME plus bacterial filtration. - Type C — viral + bacterial: full filtration, for patients with respiratory infection.
With >99.9% bacterial efficiency and low (<30 mL adult) dead space, the filter conditions gas without adding meaningful rebreathing. It pairs with any standard 22/15 mm circuit; for a combined filter-plus-mount device see our HMEF with catheter mount and the HMEF & catheter mount guide.
