Frequently Asked Questions — Butterfly / Scalp Needle for IV Infusion
Which gauges are available and which is used in paediatrics?
Available in 18G, 19G, 21G, 23G, 25G and 27G, colour-coded by gauge to the ISO standard. In paediatrics and for difficult or fragile veins the finer gauges (23–27G) are preferred; 21G is a common adult choice. On the gauge scale the higher the number, the thinner the needle.
Can the butterfly needle be used for blood collection?
Yes. The winged design and short tubing make it well suited to drawing blood from difficult veins, in neonates, paediatrics and geriatrics, as well as for short-duration IV infusion and ambulatory chemotherapy. The fixation wings help anchor it on the back of the hand, forearm or scalp.
What does the triple-cut bevel do?
The fine triple-cut bevel makes a cleaner, lower-resistance puncture, which reduces trauma to the vein and discomfort to the patient — important for fragile paediatric and geriatric veins and for repeated access.
Is there a safety (shielded) version, and which gauge for blood draws?
A safety version with a shield or retractable mechanism is available to reduce needlestick injury. For blood collection, 21–23G are preferred; very fine 25–27G needles can cause haemolysis and invalidate some samples, so they are usually avoided for phlebotomy and reserved for difficult or paediatric veins.

Full Description — Butterfly / Scalp Needle for IV Infusion
Edaochi Medical's butterfly (scalp / winged) needle is designed for short-duration peripheral access and blood collection, especially where veins are small or fragile. The flexible fixation wings give the clinician control during insertion and a stable anchor afterwards, while the 30 cm PE tubing keeps the connection away from the puncture site.
Gauge range and colour coding
Available in 18G to 27G, each colour-coded by gauge to the ISO standard so the right size is identified at a glance. On the gauge scale the higher the number, the thinner the device: finer gauges (23–27G) suit paediatrics, neonates and difficult veins; 21G is a common adult choice. See our IV needle gauge chart for colours, flow and uses.
Low-trauma design
The fine triple-cut bevel makes a cleaner puncture with less resistance, reducing vein trauma and patient discomfort — important for repeated access and fragile veins. A standard Luer connector mates with syringes, needle-free connectors and extension lines.
Clinical use
- Paediatric and geriatric IV infusion - Blood collection from difficult veins - Ambulatory chemotherapy and short-term therapy
