A Herbal Nail Cream for Natural and TCM Retailers — What the Label Can and Cannot Say
Customers of herbal shops, TCM clinics and natural retailers outside China often know the three herbs in this cream by their Chinese names. This page covers what makes the product fit that shelf, and two claims it cannot carry.
Who this is for
TCM clinics abroad
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine practices in Europe, North America and Australia that retail a small range alongside treatment.
Herbal and Asian pharmacies
Chinese and pan-Asian herbal shops and pharmacy counters whose customers recognise the herbs by their Chinese names.
Natural and health stores
Independent natural retailers and online natural-beauty shops looking for a foot-care product with named botanical ingredients.
The heritage you can use
Each of the three herbs has a traditional use on the skin, the feet or the nails.
- 苦参 Sophora flavescens root. One of the best-known herbs for external washes and ointments for the skin of the feet. Dossier.
- 土荆皮 Pseudolarix bark. The herb Chinese practice reaches for specifically for the nails and feet, and for external use only. Dossier.
- 凤仙花 Impatiens balsamina. Colloquially 指甲花, the “nail flower”, used for centuries to dye fingernails. Dossier.
Print the Chinese names with pinyin next to the Latin binomials. Customers who know the herbs read those names first.

Two claims this product cannot carry
1. “All natural”
The functional ingredient is salicylic acid at 1.6–2.0%. It is a keratolytic that softens hardened keratin, and it is the ingredient that acts on a thick nail. Cosmetic-grade salicylic acid is normally manufactured rather than extracted from a plant, so “100% natural” or “all natural” would not be true, and in the EU, claims on cosmetics have to be truthful and supported. The accurate description is a herbal formula with salicylic acid.
2. “Herbal medicine for nail fungus”
The herbs come from the Chinese materia medica, but the product is a cosmetic, not a registered herbal medicine. Presenting it as a remedy for fungal infection makes it an unlawful medicine in the EU, the UK and the US. A TCM practitioner may hold their own views on the herbs; the jar can only carry cosmetic claims. The regulatory routes guide explains where the line sits.

Getting started

Stock packaging ships in 7 working days. Shelf life is 1 year unopened. In the EU and UK, the seller placing it on the market under their name takes on the responsible person duties; the pharmacy distribution guide lists them.
Common questions
Can we describe the cream as 100% natural?
No. The functional ingredient is salicylic acid at 1.6–2.0%, and cosmetic-grade salicylic acid is normally manufactured, not extracted. Describe it as a herbal formula with salicylic acid, or a botanical nail cream, which is accurate.
Is it a traditional Chinese medicine?
No. It is a cosmetic that uses three herbs from the Chinese materia medica. It is not a registered herbal medicine in China or anywhere else, and a practitioner should not present it as one.
Is the product organic or COSMOS certified?
No. No third-party certification is held for this line, organic or otherwise, and organic claims should not be made for it.
Can the Chinese herb names go on the label?
Yes, as additional information. The ingredient list must use INCI names in markets that require them, but 苦参, 土荆皮 and 凤仙花 with their pinyin can sit on the front panel or a heritage panel, and for this audience they usually should.
We are a small shop. What is the minimum order?
One unit in our stock packaging. A shop or a single TCM clinic can stock a few jars without any artwork commitment, and move to its own label at 500 units if the product earns it.
