The kyphoplasty balloon is what separates kyphoplasty from direct vertebroplasty: introduced through the trocar into the fractured vertebral body and inflated with contrast under controlled pressure, it compacts cancellous bone, restores height of the collapsed body and leaves a defined cavity. Cement then fills that cavity at low pressure — and the leak risk, which in direct vertebroplasty comes from injecting against resistant bone, drops accordingly. Sizes 6×10 and 6×15 mm with working pressure up to 300 psi and radiopaque markers at both balloon ends for positioning under fluoroscopy. Inflation is by gauge device — the 30/40 bar unit from our cath-lab line reads comfortably in the 20.7 bar zone those 300 psi represent. In a bipedicular approach two balloons work simultaneously, one per pedicle; orders are sized by cases and approach like the rest of the category.

What changes versus direct vertebroplasty?
The cavity. In vertebroplasty cement is injected against resistant bone and the required pressure drives leak risk. The balloon first compacts the cancellous bone and leaves a defined cavity that cement fills at low pressure — besides restoring height in the collapsed body, kyphoplasty's own mechanical goal.
6×10 or 6×15?
By vertebral body size and fracture: 10 mm for thoracic bodies and contained cavities, 15 mm for broad lumbars. In bipedicular work both balloons are usually the same size. The buying ratio follows the unit's caseload — lumbar dominates in osteoporotic fracture.
What inflates it?
Contrast (to see it on fluoroscopy) via a gauge inflation device. The 300 psi working pressure is ≈ 20.7 bar: our cath-lab line's 30 or 40 bar device reads that zone precisely. If your unit lacks one, it joins the same order.
